When someone is in sustained fight-or-flight:
• Cortisol signals the body to retain visceral fat as an energy reserve for the "emergency" that never ends
• It promotes gluconeogenesis, keeping blood glucose elevated even without dietary carbs
• It causes insulin resistance, so even the modest insulin response from protein becomes problematic
• It breaks down muscle tissue (catabolic), which lowers metabolic rate
• It increases water retention, masking any fat loss on the scale
• It disrupts sleep, which further elevates cortisol — a vicious cycle.
Stress stalls results, which can add more stress. If you are in high-stress environments and not seeing progress despite watching your macros like a hawk and doing everything right. It might be time to perform a stress inventory, and then work on that part of your program. A meaty stress-reducing hug to you all!
